Thorndon Park Primary School overview

Challenge

As an inquiry school, Thorndon Park was challenged to provide relevant and appropriate content for its students in a digital world. Unfortunately, often inappropriate materials and advertisements were commonplace and finding up-to-date materials was costly both in terms of finances and time for staff.

Teacher, Karsan Hutchinson, was immediately enticed by ClickView’s interactive tools, teacher resources and analytics. The extensive number of videos available was particularly appealing, as they connected directly to Thorndon Park’s units of inquiry and provided a springboard for student-led exploration. Monitoring comprehension could also be simplified as students engaged with the program and the interactive elements, turning what could have been passive viewing into active learning experiences for pupils.

"Simply put, ClickView is much more than a video platform, it could be used as a dynamic tool for teaching, assessment and inquiry.", said Hutchinson.

Solution

With each student using their Chromebook and headphones, Hutchinson could easily differentiate content to suit varied ability, interest and readiness levels.

ClickView’s autonomous style allowed students to engage at their appropriate level as well as pause, rewind, and revisit content as needed. This program allowed Thorndon Primary to differentiate, not just by year level, but also by ability within the same class. It also ensured equity whilst challenging and engaging every student, as well as simplifying targeted IEPs goals.

The blend of teacher instruction and high-quality video supported visual learners, while narration and discussion engaged auditory learners. Kinaesthetic learners are also catered for through printable worksheets which encourage a range of written, annotation based, drawing activities and individual responses extending student learning far beyond the video content.

Outcome

Thorndon Park quickly discovered that ClickView was particularly effective when introducing new units and building a shared foundation of knowledge. All subject areas are catered for from Art to Zoology as well as topics such as national and international holidays, online safety and targeted literacy and numeracy subjects. Videos include explicit resources therefore reducing teacher workload whilst increasing student engagement and understanding.

"It didn’t take long for my Year 5/6 class to become immersed in the platform, using it to supplement explicit instruction across most curriculum areas." said Hutchinson.

Teachers discovered that by providing for whole-class immersion through interactive questioning, independent learning, curated playlists, uploaded content and printable resources, ClickView ensures that learning is active and inclusive for all ages and abilities. Embedded questions allowed staff to instantly gauge individual comprehension, while analytics provided insights into engagement. It was quick and easy to see which concepts needed revisiting and which students required support.

Karsan Hutchinson was thrilled with the unit this year; "During our inquiry into sustainability, I built a playlist of videos on biodiversity, recycling and renewable energy, which students used to guide their individual lines of inquiry. I also uploaded my own content to the platform, making it a central repository for all video-based learning in the classroom. This allows me to integrate student-created videos, flipped learning and teacher-recorded explanations alongside ClickView, giving students a familiar space to access everything."

Further to this, by watching as a class, students gained shared language and examples, making successive inquiry and subsequent discussions more purposeful.

"One of ClickView’s most powerful features turned out to be the ability to embed interactive elements into videos. Instead of passively consuming content, students were actively encouraged to respond to relevant, ready-made comprehension questions, short prompts or multiple-choice quizzes. Some staff even used the existing ClickView tools as a formative strategy." Hutchinson added.

Looking ahead

By introducing ClickView’s relevant, fresh and high-quality videos in their classrooms, Thorndon Park saw a measurable improvement in student engagement and confidence in managing their own learning - no matter where they were in their abilities. The school now wants to expand this program beyond the ‘tester’ cohort of year 5/6.

ClickView’s real-world examples and easy-to-use platform have allowed both students and staff the flexibility to learn through up-to-date resources while collecting data on students learning abilities and progress.

The future for them is a blend of the ClickView content that is already accessible, and the development of their own customisable features and assessment tools. This will allow them to streamline planning and assessments, to personalise their students learning and access the most relevant materials without adding out-of-hours work to their already busy lives.
