This month, Movies + TV has had a diverse selection of compelling documentaries and TV series additions.

Whether it’s the races, the pokies, sporting games or betting apps, Australians can’t seem to escape the insidious presence of gambling. Deeply engrained in our national culture, Shaun Micallef investigates this toxic obsession in Shaun Micallef’s Going for Broke. Join Micallef over three episodes as he travels across to country to tackle a multi-billion-dollar giant that has devastating consequences for most held in its grasps.

Learn about controversial filmmaker Leni Riefensthal in the acclaimed documentary Riefenstahl. Available for Australian and New Zealand schools, the film unravels the contradictions of Riefenstahl, Hitler’s asset in fuelling the Nazi propaganda machine. Supported by archival interviews of Riefenstahl, this documentary dissects how her glorification of the Nazis, juxtaoposed by her denial of supporting them, makes for a fascinating insight into a director responsible for crafting Nazi Germany’s most infamous propaganda film.

A coming-of-age story in the world of competitive table tennis sets the scene for Top Spin. Another exceptional addition from New Day Films available in Australia and New Zealand, the documentary follows three teenage athletes with Olympic-sized dreams. Complexities of adolescent pressures come to light in honest confessionals from the teen pros, who are learning how to balance school, family commitments, friendships and Olympic ambition.

A highlight exclusively for New Zealand schools, From Field to Front pays tribute to a fallen World War I soldier and All Blacks captain. Presented by former All Blacks captain Sean Fitzpatrick, this moving documentary honours the life of Dave Gallaher, who fought for New Zealand in World War I and lead the All Blacks in 1905. Through a moving global soil exchange, Gallaher’s story ends with his return home to New Zealand.
