North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores
The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is one of three state aquariums administered by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. Opened in September 1976 as a Marine Resources Center and renamed an aquarium in 1986, it is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The Aquarium sits in the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area, 298 acres of maritime forest donated to the state in 1971 for nature and wildlife education. It takes visitors on a journey from the North Carolina mountains to the Crystal Coast and the open Atlantic, with river otters, sharks, shipwreck exhibits, bald eagles, and nature trails. The mission of the NC Aquariums is to inspire appreciation and conservation of aquatic environments.
