CodeJoy

Working with organizations like the Jim Henson Company, The Lawrence Hall of Science, and Sesame Workshop, Matt has found his niche directly between the worlds of entertainment and education. A craftsman, a filmmaker, and a teacher, Matt has spent the last 20 years looking for new ways to engage young minds through storytelling and technology. Matt and Kelsey co-founded CodeJoy to innovate and elevate best practices in hands-on teaching with technology.

CodeJoy was formed in 2019 by Kelsey Derringer and Matt Chilbert around the question of how to include more kids than ever in coding and robotics. They imagined a program where learners feel welcome, experience success, and interact with real robots from anywhere in the world. Founded in Matt's garage in Pittsburgh, PA, CodeJoy delivers live, virtual student shows in which learners code motors, LEDs and sensors that control cardboard robots in the studio, with no classroom hardware required. The company also offers teacher professional development via live video, helping educators new to coding use robots authentically in their classrooms, plus initiative planning that packages professional development, student performances and hardware. Through the video system, CodeJoy can engage a single classroom or a whole school with only an internet connection.
