The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, SD
The Mammoth Site is an active paleontological research site and museum preserving Ice Age fossils in their original location. Over 60 mammoths (58 Columbian, 3 woolly) have been unearthed, along with at least 87 other Late Ice Age animals, and unlike traditional museums, many remains are displayed exactly where they were discovered. Visitors can tour this indoor active dig site year round.
Discovered in 1974 in Hot Springs, South Dakota, the Mammoth Site formed in a prehistoric sinkhole that trapped mammoths and other animals. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, with a mission of preservation, research, and interpretation of the site, and the development of a broad understanding of the Late Ice Age record across a global framework.
